Job Description:

Purpose: Are you passionate about ensuring all families have equitable access to conditions that foster wellness? Do you have first-hand experience with the child welfare system that you would like to use to help improve conditions for others? Does the idea of sharing your perspective while building relationships with family and community members excite you? If so, we want to meet you! Children's Home Society of North Carolina (CHS) recently launched a new division of the organization, the Institute for Family. The goal of the Institute for Family is to elevate family well-being as a priority and dramatically reduce our country's over-reliance on child protective services. We do this through two core strategies: * Mindset Strategy-uses multimedia communication and storytelling to elevate family voice, acknowledge the contextual issues facing families, and compel action. * Action Strategy-convenes local community coalitions to design, implement, and test policies and practices that lead to better conditions for families. IFF recognizes that the perspectives and experiences of overburdened families have historically been excluded from the solution/system designs. We are committed to creating new processes that listen to, value, and share power with historically marginalized parents and youth. We are seeking a dynamic, passionate, and highly motivated Engagement Specialist to help design and lead and comprehensive family and community engagement strategy. The goal of the engagement strategy is to embed parent and community stakeholder perspectives throughout our organizational decision-making and action development. This role will be filled by someone with first-hand experience, ideally as a parent or close family member who has had interactions with child welfare, who can bring a unique perspective to the team and encourage new ways of thinking. This position will identify, recruit, build trust with, and support individuals with lived experience to participate in our local, statewide, and national work (our podcast/films/media work, community coalitions, interviews/focus groups, etc.). The Engagement Specialist will also identify and build relationships with community partners that can help foster family engagement (e.g. faith-based communities, housing associations, neighborhood leaders, etc.). In addition, the Engagement Specialist will represent IFF in local, state, and national meetings, convenings, trainings, and other opportunities where we want to learn from the perspective of someone with lived experience. To further integrate youth and family voice into the overall work of CHS, this individual will additionally serve on the CHS Diversity Equity Inclusion committee. This individual will work closely with the Strategy Director to accomplish the responsibilities outlined below. Responsibilities: * Assist in designing a family and community engagement strategy for the Institute for Family that meaningfully includes diverse parents, youth, and community partners at various levels (state, region, community) * Identify opportunities for the Institute for Family and Children's Home Society of North Carolina to share decision making power with parents and youth * Help conduct and develop strategies for family and community partner outreach * Serve a primary role in recruiting, selecting, and engaging family partners, with a particular emphasis on individuals that have been historically marginalized or had negative experiences with the child welfare system * Identify community entities that are trusted sources of support for families and develop/maintain relationships to further advance our engagement strategy * Challenge the status quo, encouraging team members to think outside of the box from a perspective of individuals with lived experience * Identify and make recommendations to address any barriers to parent/youth engagement * Assist in building trust between parents/youth, historical decision makers, and community members. * Build readiness for professionals across the field and historical decision-makers to meaningfully engage parents/youth * Set parents and youth up for success by providing training in areas such as context, terminology, processes, systems, etc. * Facilitate meetings that include family representatives, practitioners, and community members * Document the development of the family and community engagement strategy, including lessons learned, to inform future directions * Share learning with other teams across Children's Home Society to help increase family engagement for the broader agency General Requirements: * Some high school education. Diploma or GED preferred * Experience as a parent or family member who has been involved in the Child Welfare system Qualifications: * Familiarity with former and/or current families that are overburdened by social conditions and have been negatively impacted by one or more system(child welfare, juvenile justice, etc.) * Knowledge of social conditions and contexts that contribute to child maltreatment * Experience working with diverse populations who have been overburdened by social conditions * Strong project management skills and ability to work independently and creatively * Excellent interpersonal, communication, and meeting facilitation skills * Strong relationship building skills including the ability to manage conflict and maintain appropriate boundaries * The ability to be solution-focused, and challenge perspectives in a respectful manner * Strong time management, organization, and attention to detail
