Overview
The Vice President of Nursing and Market Chief Nursing Officer's
number one responsibility is to deliver the most remarkable patient
experience, in every dimension, every time, and understand how they
contribute to the health system's vision of achieving that
commitment to patients and families. This position will oversee 7
hospitals within the Greater Charlotte market including the
following: Presbyterian Medical Center (576 beds), Rowman Medical
Center (268 beds), Matthew Medical Center (157 beds), Huntersville
Medical Center (151 beds), Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital (48 beds),
Mint Hill Medical Center (36 beds) and our new Ballantyne Medical
Center (36 beds). The VP of Nursing will provide leadership in
clinical strategy and standardization for Novant Health nursing
practice and patient care across the healthcare system. This
position will be responsible for maintaining accountability for the
provision of high quality, safe patient care across the
corporation, consistent with the Novant Health mission, vision,
values and strategic plan. The VP of Nursing will ensure that key
areas are aligned for the continued development and implementation
of a strategic plan for nursing.
Qualifications
- Education: Must have a BSN and a Master's degree in health
sciences or business-related field (MSN/MHA/MBA). A doctoral degree
in nursing is preferred (PhD/DNP).
- Experience: The candidate is required to have a minimum of five
(5) years of clinical experience and five (5) years of CNO
leadership experience in a complex healthcare hospital system
preferrable over a large facility or mulitiply hospital locations.
The candidate must be a strategic, business-focused individual who
has partnered successfully with senior leaders to achieve
objectives and drive change.
- Licensure / Certification / Registration: Current licensure as
a Registered Nurse (RN) in a state where primary accountability
lies, required. Certification in healthcare or business field
highly recommended, preferred.
Responsibilities
Leadership
- Ensures that nursing practice is governed by professional
nurses.
- Participate in leadership of the healthcare organization as a
full member of the executive leadership team. This includes working
with governing bodies such as the Board of Trustees, Medical
Executive Committee and VP councils.
- Consistently models the mission, vision and values of Novant
Health.
- Participates in the strategic plan of the healthcare
organization, and leads the development of the vision/strategic
plan for nursing.
- Provides operational leadership and guidance for all core
processes.
- Effectively manages conflict and resolution.
- Serves as an agent of change.
- Identifies and removes barriers that impede established
goals.
- Adheres to ethical standards (such as, ANA's Guide to Code of
Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, 2015).
- Seeks opportunities to engage in educational opportunities for
ongoing personal development.
- Participates in professional organizations and community
boards/activities.
- Maintains and fosters strong partnerships with local schools of
nursing and the academic community at large.
Quality Outcomes:
- Evaluates and revises systems and processes of nursing services
to ensure achievement of nurse-sensitive patient, client, and
family-centered outcomes.
- Demonstrates knowledge of process improvement principles and
applies appropriately to improve patient care outcomes.
- Actively engages nurses, physicians, interdisciplinary team
members, and leaders to improve systems.
- Ensures ongoing innovation within nursing services.
- Facilitates the conduct, dissemination, and utilization of
research.
- Participate in programs that study and benchmark
nursing-sensitive metrics (e.g., National Database of Nursing
Quality Indicators).
- Ensures integration of appropriate technologies to meet the
needs of professional nursing.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and boards of
nursing.
Patient Engagement:
- Ensures the delivery of Novant Health service standards by
nursing team members with timely service recovery, as needed.
- Monitors patient engagement scores and co-creates strategies
for improvement with team members and leaders.
- Serves as a patient advocate.
- Fosters a collaborative environment that maximizes the
patient's and family's ability to make informed decisions.
- Provides opportunity for customer input into policy
development.
- Ensures delivery of culturally-competent care.
Team Member Engagement:
- Establishes a strong professional practice environment,
including interdisciplinary collaboration, shared governance, and
professional models of care, team member development and evidence
based practice.
- Ensures registered nurse participation in decision-making at
various levels of the organization.
- Actively guides nursing to align with strategic initiatives
within the profession (such as those documented in The Future of
Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, IOM, 2010)
- Coordinates the development of goals, objectives and action
plans to achieve staff education and development.
- Monitors team member engagement results and co-creates
strategies for improvement with team members, leaders, and human
resource partners.
- Serves as a professional role model and mentor to inspire,
develop, recruit, and retain nurse leaders.
- Monitors the diversity of the nursing workforce in relation to
local population diversity.
- Ensures a safe working environment.
- Pursues continuing and / or formal education and maintains
professional affiliations to further career development and
understanding of the health care / business environment as
evidenced by completed education and seminar hours and professional
group participation.
Financial/Business Acumen:
- Provides global oversight of capital and operational budget
specific to nursing and patient care.
- Manages positions within nursing services to achieve quality
and productivity within budgetary nursing development.
- Seeks approval for capital and operational budgets.
- Acquires and allocates human, material, and financial resources
for specific functions and processes.
- Develops collaborative partnerships to optimize key clinical
and financial outcomes.
- Participates in the negotiations of professional service
contracts between health systems and providers.
- Reviews and maintains job descriptions, department
policies/procedures and other documents as needed. Associated
