The Manager, Health System Performance Improvement is responsible for performing assessments, quantifying achievable savings opportunities, designing solutions to address those opportunities, developing and implementing action plans, and tracking and monitoring outcomes. This individual will partner with client teams to solve complex business problems, improve performance, and operationalize the client's priority initiatives. The ideal candidate for this role must be passionate about driving improvements in performance, effective at working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment and be confident in their interactions with senior leaders, providers, and business partners.

The role of the Health System Performance Improvement team is to support financial sustainability for hospitals and health systems by bringing innovative solutions to build and retain a diverse workforce enabling the organization to effectively control and reduce rising operating costs while providing high quality, safe, reliable, and cost-effective patient care. Successful hospitals are committed to continuously improving clinical, operational, and financial efficiency across the continuum of care.

The Manager, Health System Performance Improvement will lead work teams assigned to address opportunities to assist hospitals and health systems to improve workforce management. This includes areas such as workflows and productivity, premium labor expense, care delivery model redesign, span of control, skill mix and to leverage technology and tools as appropriate. The manager will partner with the project leader and client to ensure that agreed upon clinical, financial and operational goals are achieved within the approved project scope and timeline. - All leaders on the team are expected to be hands-on with project design, deliverable creation and implementation support for clients. This work spans the continuum of care. -

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leading initiative teams to identify opportunities to improve clinical, financial and operational performance and develop solutions that will result in the client achieving leading practice performance
  • Utilizing change management techniques; build consensus among client stakeholders who play a critical key role in the ability to successfully implement identified solutions
  • Synthesizing findings from observations, interviews and analytics that clearly communicate, both orally and written, the problem identified, supporting data analyses, insights and fact-based recommendations for improvement
  • Structuring complex business problems into frameworks that can be analyzed and solved
  • Performing project management activities, such as tracking deliverables, creating status reports, managing resource plans, and monitoring successful achievement of project goals
  • Supporting the creation of sales pursuit materials and other business development activities (e.g., proposals and Statements of Work)
  • Participating in the continuous improvement and development of leading practice methodologies and training materials necessary to address ever-evolving client needs
  • Providing subject matter expertise and/or oversight to operational and clinical consulting engagements depending upon expertise
  • Overseeing and managing team members either directly or through a matrixed environment
  • Providing coaching and mentoring of project team members with the goal of developing and retaining talent within the organization
  • Ensuring that client expectations and contract deliverables are met during assigned engagement

    • Bachelor's degree
    • 5+ years of experience in any of the following areas: workforce productivity, systems analysis, project management, general consulting and/or business process improvement
    • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint
    • Ability to travel 50% and up to 80% depending on client need
    • Foundational understanding of health systems / provider organizations
    • Experience developing and implementing operating plans, analyzing financial and quality data
    • Consultative experience across multiple clinical and cost improvement-related areas
    • Demonstrated success in yielding results within the area of workforce optimization
    • Proven analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to solve complex problems and communicate findings clearly and concisely with all levels of an organization
    • Able to take initiative and work independently in a fast-paced environment

      • Master's degree in business administration; master's degree in health administration
      • Hospital operational and/or hospital cost reduction experience resulting in significant recurring financial benefit -
      • Experience developing cost reduction and clinical transformation methodologies and designing innovative solutions in a complex and rapidly changing environment
      • Proven experience working in a highly matrixed organization

        Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
