applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a
higher level within the job hierarchy.
Position Summary
This Senior or Lead Engineer position will lead the development and
maintenance of voltage control applications, such as regulator and
capacitor controls, advanced power electronics, sensors, and other
grid automation capabilities, including data acquisition and power
quality use cases. This position helps test new technologies with
power controls, such as how they automatically determine where the
utility source is when circuits switch to allow for distributed
energy resources to apply the correct voltage to the feeder. They
support new grid technologies such as distributed high speed
voltage control and advanced sensors. Position has access every day
to advanced lab equipment and get to work with our internal Control
Hardware in the Loop lab. They are also accountable for the voltage
and power electronic control standards, settings templates, and
application guidance within CD.
Responsibilities
+ Develop and maintain standards for advanced automation (device to
SCADA and peer to peer), voltage control (regulator, capacitor,
power electronics), and line sensor integration
+ Develop/maintain control templates and application engineering
guidance for related controls and devices
+ Develop/facilitate OT Security and Firmware management efforts
with OT Security, CD OAS, and CD Program Governance for OT devices
within area of accountability
+ Support device integration into Enterprise-wide management tools
and integration into DSCADA systems
+ Further development of automation and device testing
capabilities
Additional Responsibilities
+ Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the
identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area
of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and
assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
+ Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through
effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and
monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization
exists; handles differing situations which require searching for
solutions within area of expertise.
+ Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence,
documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to
conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards
relative to area of assignment.
+ Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical
responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects;
applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and
disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's
competitive position.
+ Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices,
and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend
enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant
to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments,
technologies procedures and equipment.
+ Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate
work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written
communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
+ Supports the company's goals and represents the company
positively and professionally.
+ Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering
professionals.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative
experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined
below.
Senior Engineer
+ Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering
+ In addition to required degree, six (6) years minimum of related
work experience OR
+ Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering AND five (5) years of
engineering experience with state registration as a Professional
Engineer.
+ Bachelor's of Science degree must be ABET accredited with no
state registration as a Professional Engineer
+ A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of
the B.S. Engineering degree.
Lead Engineer
+ Bachelors degree in Engineering
+ In addition to Bachelor's degree, eight (8) years minimum of
related work experience
+ Registration as Professional Engineer
+ A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of
the B.S. Engineering degree.
Desired Qualifications
+ Voltage control integration/development experience (voltage
regulation and capacitor controls for volt var systems)
+ Power electronics integration/development experience
+ SCADA and advanced automation concept development/integration
experience
+ Familiarity with NIST Security Standards, Certificate Security
Management, Firmware Management and Testing
+ Major electric design project experience
+ Technical Standards development/development oversight
experience
+ Familiarly with communication transport and communication
assisted schemes
+ Familiarity with IEEE 519, and other relevant technical
standards
+ Familiarity with advanced control protocols such as IEC 61850,
OpenFMB, DNP3.0
+ Experience with the development of peer to peer and distributed
control intelligence capabilities
+ Electrical component (utility operational technology control)
testing experience, such as Omicron or Doble/Manta device
testing
+ Familiarity with advanced modeling & hardware in the loop
testing
+ Distribution Medium Voltage component integration/design
experience
+ New concept ideation, identification, scoping, and development
experience
+ Regulatory program technical development experience
+ Experience with factory acceptance/vendor OT device development
and testing
+ Technical Engineering team SME team leadership experience
+ Experience as lead technical SME managing multi-faceted complex
technical initiatives with major customer impacts/visibility
+ Skilled in engineering theories and principles
+ Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design
issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and
preparing and presenting recommendations.
+ Good written and oral communication skills.
+ Skilled principles of project management.
+ Experience in the utility industry.
+ Department specific experience applicable to the hiring
department.
Working Conditions
+ M - F, 8x5 or 9x80. Flexible schedules available after training
and based on business needs
+ Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both
remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However,
hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke
Energy facility.
