Job purpose The primary role of the Structural Engineering Department Head is to manage a group of Structural Engineers and Designers and work closely with clients. Leadership and the ability to motivate and mentor others is an essential part of this role. The department head will maintain responsibility for the technical direction of the group and will be the administrative supervisor for all personnel within the department. This position will assess project feasibility, cost and timelines. This position requires a high level of communication and coordination with individuals, engineering teams and clients.
Duties and responsibilities --- Coaches, directs, coordinates, facilitates, and supervises structural staff. This includes all evaluation and employee relations responsibilities: staffing, hiring, development, promotion, and performance management. --- Ensures the technical competency and quality of work performed by staff and seal discipline documents. --- Develops, organizes, and implements discipline and departmental standards and improvements. Responsible for establishing, monitoring, and adhering to budgets and make any necessary adjustments to meet financial objectives. --- Assist Account Managers in preparing proposals. --- Prepares and monitors project work schedules and projected workload schedules for the department. --- Develops and implements training programs to meet the department needs. --- Responsible for the department billability. --- Research and analyze client requests associated with structural design. --- Prepare civil and structural design calculations, drawings, and specifications for industrial systems. --- Generate analyses, specifications, and estimated construction schedules for projects. --- Coordinate with various engineering groups including mechanical and electrical groups to assist in preparing designs for projects. --- Communicate with clients, vendors, and relevant stakeholders on projects. --- Participate in team project meetings. --- Prepare technical information and presentations for peers, teams and clients. --- Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, and innovation are highly valued. --- Provide expertise in various aspects of engineering and design. --- All other duties as required.
Qualifications --- Bachelor or Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited program. --- Registered Professional Engineer, Structural Engineer registration a plus. --- Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in structural engineering design or related field. --- Ability to gather and analyze measurement data from the field. --- Ability to accurately interpret and critically evaluate design drawings and schematics. --- Ability to meet tight deadlines and maintain quality service while under pressure. --- High level of conscientiousness and attention to detail. --- Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g. Being able to explain technical issues to clients using common language.) --- Demonstrate a strong work ethic. --- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and Power Point. --- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat (or Bluebeam) software.

Working conditions This position routinely operates in a professional office environment with the potential for travel. Field visits may include working environments such as factory floors where industrial machinery is present and in operation.
Physical requirements This role requires the employee to occasionally stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
